HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set did not start as planned, with St. Mary's opening a quick 3-0 lead. Adrian College posted 15 points during the stanza, all coming from kills by Alex Tobler, Korbyn Koerner and Grace Welch.
Set two went much better as Koerner posted two kills, giving the Bulldogs a lead they would never relinquish, despite the score being knotted twice (3-3, 4-4). Tobler powered a five-point run, owning four kills to push the score to 19-8, forcing the Belles to use their second timeout of the set. AC forced the contest to a set four with their win, capped by a service error by St. Mary's.
The previous set's momentum did not carry into the next, Adrian did have a fighting chance, tying the score at 11-11. A six-point run on the Bulldogs behalf evened the score, Katelyn Bergman owned two kills, while Liz Susitko posted one service ace.
Set four kicked off with a 5-0 lead for AC, Koerner and Tobler posted kills and Megan Prsa had a kill. Koerner also paired with Bergman for a block. The Bulldogs owned the lead for much of the early-goings, hoping to push a tie-breaking fifth set, but a push by the Belles around points 10 spelt the undoing of a come-back attempt.
Alex Tobler led the Bulldogs offensive efforts with 18 kills, also posting 14 digs and two block assists on defense. She also owned one of the teams three service aces on the day.
Madison Federmeyer posted a team-best four block assists. She also had five digs and one assist.
The Bulldogs return to action next Thursday as the travel across town to take on NAIA-foe Siena Heights in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
