Bulldogs Drop Tightly Contested Battle with Britons

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Adrian College women's volleyball team lost to Albion on Friday, Sep. 7 in its first game of the MIAA Preview Tournament. Each set was closely contested, with the first set needing 26 points to be won.


Final Score: Albion 3, Adrian 0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-22)

Records: Albion 3-2 (0-0 MIAA), Adrian 1-3 (0-0 MIAA)


The Bulldogs and Britons were neck-and-neck throughout most of the first set, until Adrian was able to take a six point lead late in the set. Albion was able to battle back, and won seven straight points to take the lead from the Bulldogs. The Britons wouldn't trail in the set again, and came away with a 26-24 victory in set one.

The second set was similar to the first, with the two teams playing even in the beginning. This time it was Albion that took an eight point lead before Adrian came clawing back. The Bulldogs' comeback wasn't enough, and the Britons held on to take the second set, 25-21.

Albion was determined to take the third set, and did not trail at all in the final frame, despite the Bulldogs' continuous knocking on the doorstep. The Britons staved off the Black and Gold to win the set 25-22 and finish the match.


• Sophomore Alex Tobler led the team with seven kills and added eight digs and one block assist.

• Sophomore Grace Welch was second on the team in kills with four and had three digs.

• Senior Olivia Welch and Sophomore Liz Susitko led the team in digs, with 18 and 15, respectively. Welch also added five kills while Susitko led the team in assists, with 23.


• Kelsey Gustafson led Albion's offense with 10 kills.

• Grace VanDorn led the Britons in assists with 26.

• Albion's defense was led by Monica Shuk, with 19 digs.


Adrian faces tournament site hosts, and  the 20th-ranked team in the nation – Hope later on Friday, before concluding the MIAA Preview Tournament on Saturday against Finlandia and Kalamazoo.
