Softball Opens MIAA Season With Two Losses at Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Adrian College softball team started the conference season on the road in a doubleheader against Hope. The Flying Dutch won both games 5-1 over the Bulldogs. Bryanna Collins tallied Adrian's only RBI in game one. Kayla Belfiori scored the RBI for the Bulldogs in game two.


Final Scores: Game One: Hope 5, Adrian 1; Game Two: Hope 5, Adrian 1

Records: Hope (12-8, 2-0), Adrian (2-14, 0-2)


Game One: Hope 5, Adrian 1

• Lenington led off the inning with a strike out, however, she reached first on a wild pitch. She stole second base before Collins doubled two batters later to score the only Bulldog run in the first game.

• The first two Hope batters were walked and then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.

• Hayley Reitsma singled, scoring the lead runner and advancing Shay Pinhey to third.

• Sierra Mutschler hit a sacrifice fly to score Pinhey and take a 2-1 lead.

• The Flying Dutch increased the lead in the third when Amanda Diaz singled to right scoring Sarah Jones to build a 3-1 lead.

• Adams hit a sacrifice fly to score Sarah Jones, increasing the Hope lead to 4-1.

• The final run was scored by the Flying Dutch at the bottom of the 5th to put the score at 5-1.

Game Two: Hope 5, Adrian 1

• Adrian scored first in the bottom second inning when Belfiori hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Van't Land.

• Hope scored four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead in game two.

• Jones homered in the fifth for the final run of the day to give Hope the 5-1 lead.


Game One: Hope 5, Adrian 1

Jaime Lightner had the hot bat for the Bulldogs, hitting 2-for-3 in the game. 

• Collins recorded the other Adrian hit, scoring a run on the play.

Rebecca Neal (L, 1-1) pitched three innings allowing six hits, four runs, walked three batters and tallied one strikeout.

Paige Cubberly pitched three innings allowing two hits and one run, striking out two batters.

Game Two: Hope 5, Adrian 1

• Van't Land went 2-for-3 to lead the Bulldog bats in game two.

Natalia Younan and Chelsea Shellman each were 1-for-3.

Kaitlin Lock (L, 0-5) pitched seven innings allowing nine hits, five runs, walked one and struck out two batters in the game.


Game One: Hope 5, Adrian 1

• Hayley Reitsma went 3-for-3 in the game. She scored one run and had a RBI in the win for the Dutch.

• Diaz (2-for-2) recorded a RBI.

• Jones scored two runs while Reitsma, Pinhey, and Adams each scored one.

• Sydney Jones (W, 7-2) pitched all seven innings allowing three hits and one run. She also struck out 17 batters.

Game Two: Hope 5, Adrian 1

• Sammi Adams and Pinhey each registered two hits. Adams tallied two RBIs in the game.

• Katrina Ellis (1-for-4), Jones (1-for-1), and Amanda Diaz (1-for-3) each had a RBI.

• Katie Singer (W, 3-2) pitched seven innings allowing eight hits, one run. She walked one batter and struck out another in the contest.


• Adrian travels to face Heidelberg tomorrow in a doubleheader. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
