ADRIAN, Mich. – It was quite a way to go out on top at home for nine Adrian College women's soccer seniors on Tuesday (Oct. 28) night with a 5-2 win over Alma College. The Bulldogs had not scored over the last two matches, but set a season-high for goals in the rout of the Scots. Senior forward Erin Weide set a career-high with four goals just one shy of the school record by Amy Buchanan set in 1993. Weide upped her season total to 10 goals marking the third straight season in double figures.
Alma took the 1-0 lead 7:22 into the match as Megan Kalanik scored her third goal of the season with an assist from Kailey Vlug. The Bulldogs tied the match at 1-1 as Weide scored at 29:42 unassisted on what might have been the team's goal of the year. She broke down the defense and hit a left-footed strike into the top left corner from 18 yards.
The Bulldogs turned it on with four second-half goals as Weide scored at 48:28 from Ellery Karsten and 51:50 from Lauren Badalamente on what looked like two carbon copy goals. Both goals came on a cross from left wing that Weide ran into the middle of the box and finished near an Alma defender. Allysen Neumann cut the lead to 3-2 at 63:49 for her third of the season. Neumann had a free kick from 30 yards and placed the ball perfectly into the lower left corner through a screen of goalkeeper Lexi Lewandowski.
Adrian put the game away and responded quickly at 66:36 as Katt Sutherland scored her third of the season from Sophie Rammal on a rebound goal tapped into an open net. Weide's fourth goal of the night at 76:02 from Sam Jarrett improved the team's record to 8-8-3 overall and 6-7-2 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs have one match left on Saturday at Saint Mary's and need Alma now to lose twice to close out the season. Calvin is also in the mix just three points behind the Bulldogs.
"What a performance out of these nine seniors tonight," commented head coach Ali Alamdari. "For all of the ups and downs of a challenging season, they truly saved the best for last. Every single one of them was phenomenal, and I'm so thrilled that they got to enjoy a match like that on senior night."
