GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at Calvin College in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals ending their season with a 12-8 record. The Bulldogs have made the conference tournament in the last six seasons under head coach Ali Alamdari and hung tough against the top-seeded Knights.
Calvin (17-2-2) and Adrian split matches during the regular season each winning on their own turf. The Bulldogs managed to battle scoreless heading into the halftime break as Calvin had a 4-1 edge in shots on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Barnes saw the first varsity action of her career in a big moment and stopped all four of those Calvin shots in the first half.
The Knights showed why they are among the elite teams in the country with three second-half goals including a pair by Paige Capel. She scored at 52:46 from the right wing off the hands of Barnes to break the tie and later put her team ahead 3-0 at 62:35 on a left-footed shot through traffic at the 18-yard mark. The Knights also got a goal at 58:38 off the head of Christina Drost with Heidi Scholten getting the assist.
Adrian generated more offense in the second half with four shots on goal. Calvin held an 8-5 edge in shots on net for the match and will now host Hope College on Saturday in the MIAA Tournament Final. The Bulldogs say goodbye to four seniors including one of the best to ever don a uniform at Adrian College. Forward Sam Barker leaves with 42 goals and 20 assists in conference matches. She ranks 11th in MIAA history in goals and points (104).
