GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The women's soccer team had a three-match win streak snapped on Tuesday afternoon (6-3, 4-2 MIAA) by an opportunistic Calvin College squad (6-1-1, 3-1-1 MIAA) by the final score of 5-1 on the Knights home turf. The match was one that got away from Adrian in a hurry as early on the Knights pushed the ball. Calvin two minutes into the match hit the post with a shot and then had three straight corner kicks in a span of 1:22. Sydney Kinney's fourth corner kick of the half yielded a goal for the Knights. Kelly Koets who hit the post earlier buried her chance at the 7:09 mark for her fourth of the season.
On the very next shot on goal for Calvin it was Danielle Carter scoring her second on the campaign off a rebound at the 11:46 mark to make it 2-0. Adrian recorded their first shot on goal at the 16:48 mark by Sam Barker and also had a couple corner kicks but could not convert. Calvin made it 3-0 at the 24:52 mark as Paige Capel notched her second on the season from Koets on a pass in the box. Taylor TenHarmsel then hit the crossbar just moments later and Adrian was simply looking to get to halftime and regroup. Calvin had a 12-5 edge in first half shots.
The tide seemed to be turning slightly to start the second half as junior Erin Weide scored her ninth of the season from senior Alanna Chambry just 21 seconds into the half. But you would have needed to blink it seemed for momentum to come to a halt as TenHarmsel gave Calvin another three-goal lead just 24 seconds later from Capel.
Calvin added their fifth goal as Capel scored her second of the match at 74:54 unassisted on a 20-yard strike. Calvin led 12-3 in total shots on goal as Lexi Lewandowski made two saves in the first half and Taylor Royce made five saves in the second half. Adrian will have another stiff test on Saturday as they hope to get back in the win column starting at noon at home against Alma.
