ADRIAN, Mich. - The first MIAA home match of the season for Adrian was a double overtime tie against Alma and entering the final minute on Thursday it looked like it was going to happen again. Sophomore Erin Weide had other ideas however and her second goal of the match and eighth goal of the season gave the Bulldogs (6-1-1, 3-1-1) a big win over Hope, 3-2, in double overtime. Weide's goal at 109:50 was assisted by senior Lauren Cozzi and gave Adrian three points in the conference standings instead of one for a tie.
"Once we settled into the game, I thought we did a nice job of creating chances," commented head coach Ali Alamdari. "We just made a couple miscues that put us in the hole early and made things difficult. Definitely a big win, but we need to regroup and refocus and get ready to travel to Calvin on Saturday for another tough match."
Weide has emerged as the team's go-to scorer with junior Sam Barker out of the lineup since the Alma matchup on Sept. 13. Barker did make back into the rotation on Thursday entering the match in the first half. She ended the match with a pair of assists. Hope got on the board first at 27:20 as Lindsay Jipping crashed the net and chipped the ball over Adrian goalkeeper Chayna Wallace. Raisa Yewah came off the bench and provided a spark for the Flying Dutch (6-3, 3-2) with the assist on Jipping's goal.
Weide scored just under 10 minutes later on a cross field pass from Barker. She took the pass and got past one defender before shooting the ball past Hope goalkeeper Megan Altieri from about 18 yards out. Yewah broke the 1-1 tie at 41:23 with her second goal of the year unassisted. She took the ball on the far left wing and dribbled in on Wallace beating her low in the right corner.
The match appeared to be in the hands of Hope entering the final minutes but Becky Reynolds picked a great time to score her first goal of the season at 85:57 with Barker guiding a pass which Reynolds shot from 10 yards out in the upper right corner. The teams battled through the first overtime as Wallace needed to make one save with Adrian not recording a shot on goal. Wallace also made two saves in double overtime and Adrian scored on its only shot on goal with just 10 seconds left.
Hope ended the match with 22 shots including 10 shots on goal. Adrian registered nine shots including five shots on net. Wallace made eight saves for the Bulldogs.
