KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The nemesis of the Adrian College women's soccer team a year ago was Kalamazoo College. The Bulldogs lost twice during the regular season against the Hornets in 2011, but exacted a bit of sweet justice on Wednesday with a 2-1 overtime win on the road to improve to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAA in 2012.
The Hornets (3-3, 1-1) looked strong in the first half and took the action right at the Bulldogs. The Hornets ended the first half with a 13-3 edge in total shots. Jackie Short scored at 11:37 for Kalamazoo with an assist from Stephanie Verbeek as both teams went into the locker room with the Hornets leading 1-0.
The Bulldogs would respond to the challenge behind the moves of sophomore Erin Weide. The second-year attacker scored her fifth goal of the season at 73:58 with an assist from Lauren Cozzi. The teams ended regulation tied at 1-1 and Weide would play the role of hero at 99:13 when she beat Kalamazoo goalkeeper Lucy Mailing with an assist from Ellery Karsten for Adrian's fourth win in six matches this season.
Senior Chayna Wallace made four saves in a busy first half and stopped both shots on net in the second half. Kalamazoo attempted three shots in overtime but none were on goal. Adrian's lone shot on goal found the back of the net. Adrian held a 11-8 edge in shots in the second half. Freshman Katt Sutherland fired four shots with one shot on goal for the Bulldogs off the bench. Adrian played its second straight match without the services of All-American junior forward Sam Barker.
"Kalamazoo is a team that's given us a lot of problems in the past, but I was very pleased with the level of intensity that we brought to the matchup this time around," commented head coach Ali Alamdari. "The first half was a struggle, but Chayna was outstanding in keeping us in the game and fortunately we corrected our mistakes at halftime and battled until the result went our way. I couldn't be more happy with how the girls performed today, but tomorrow's a new day and we're excited to get back to work to get ready for Saturday."
Adrian will travel to Trine University on Saturday, Sept. 22 for a noon kickoff against the Thunder (1-4-2, 0-2-1).
