ADRIAN, Mich. - The MIAA opener proved to be a slugfest as two of the top teams in the conference battled to a scoreless tie at Performance Stadium. Adrian (3-0-1) and Alma (3-1-1) each had 13 total shots in the match with the Bulldogs having a 7-5 edge in shots on net.
Senior Courtney Pomeroy had the first good scoring chance of the match in the eighth minute as her shot was heading for the top of the net before Alma goalkeeper Rachel Doptis punched the ball over the crossbar at the last moment. The Scots had probably the best chance to score in the match in the 25th minute as Mackenzie Smith fired a low liner which senior goalkeeper Chayna Wallace dove for to her right and made a great save.
Sophomore Erin Weide and senior Lauren Cozzi were strong at midfield all night long and helped Adrian control possession on several occasions. Alma came out strong in the second half with three shots in a two-minute period with one of those from Smith saved by Wallace.
Sophomore Ellery Karsten nearly put Adrian on the board in the 65th minute as she shot the ball towards the right post and it rattled off the post on a shot which seemed to confuse Doptis. Junior Sam Barker did not play after the 54th minute as she collided with Alma's Samantha Waldrop in the 18-yard box which hampered the Adrian offensive attack.
Each team had a shot on goal in the first overtime as Karsten and Kelly Wilson of the Scots made an attempt to win the game. Freshman Katt Sutherland had two shots off target for the Bulldogs in the second overtime and Smith had a shot go wide for the Scots in the second extra session.
"We always talk about this matchup as a battle, and today was no different," said head coach Ali Alamdari. "Alma is a talented team and from a coaching standpoint we were very pleased with the composure that our backs and mids displayed under pressure. As our younger attacking players continue to gain experience and confidence over the course of the season, we'll continue to build our attack as the MIAA season develops."
The Bulldogs will hit the road on Saturday, Sept. 15 as they face off with Saint Mary's College at noon.
