ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's soccer team inched their way closer to the programs first ever MIAA Championship today (Oct. 22) as it defeated Hope College 3-2 on the field of Performance Stadium. With two games left in the regular season, Adrian controls its own destiny and needs to win one of its last two games to claim the conference title.
Just a game after when the Lady Bulldogs (14-4, 12-2 MIAA) broke the season record with most wins, sophomore All-MIAA Sam Barker broke her own record for most goals in a season with 19 after a two-goal performance today. A year ago, Barker had 17.
Barker's first goal of the match came at the 11:24 mark when she capitalized off a deflection from the Hope's goalie to put up Adrian 1-0. Junior Patti Vaaseen set up the play with a well-executed corner kick, one of a game-high 13 corners for the Lady Bulldogs.
Hope (12-4, 10-3 MIAA) managed to sneak one past the Adrian keeper at the 29:08 mark to knot up the game 1-1.
Freshman Ellery Karsten put Adrian back on top with a goal at the 37:50 mark when she drilled a ball high to the left 90 from 20 yards out. It marked Karsten's sixth goal of the season. Freshman Carmina Lizyness earned the assist.
Following a 2-1 halftime lead, Barker gained control of the ball inside of the box after the ball bounced around and placed it to the left side in the back of the net, giving Adrian a 3-1 lead with 52:09 on the clock.
The Flying Dutch made it interesting with a score off the foot of Cara Johnson with less than seven minutes left in regulation, but were unable to close the gap.
Adrian's goalie Chayna Wallace gathered in three saves in 90 minutes of play.
Its first of the last two games of the regular season for Adrian is Olivet next Saturday (Oct. 29) at Performance Stadium. Starting time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
