GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The elements of cold rain nor the Knights of Calvin College could slow down the Lady Bulldogs as the regionally ranked Adrian College women's soccer team won its 13th victory of the season, etching their names into the school record books for the most wins in a season in the history of the program. Adrian (13-4, 11-2) topped Calvin (7-9, 7-5) 4-3 on the turf of Zuidema Field.
At the 74:56th mark of the game, All-MIAA Sam Barker scored her team and conference leading 17th goal of the season off a penalty kick, giving Adrian a 4-2 lead and the eventual game-winner. For her career, Barker now stands second all-time with 34 goals surpassing Amy Buchanan (1989-93) who had 33. Her 17th goal ties her own record that she broke a year ago for most goals in a single-season.
In the first half, Adrian had a 2-0 lead courtesy of freshman midfielder Becky Reynolds who scored her first and second goal of her collegiate career. The first one came in the 19th minute when classmate Erin Weide found Reynolds for the score. The latter came eight minutes later when junior Patti Vaassen placed a nice corner kick in the box.
The Knights got on the board in the late stage of the first half and made it 2-1 when Paige Rindels snuck one past Adrian's keeper. The assist was credited to Heidi Scholten.
Adrian went in front 3-1 when Vasseen earned a goal of her own in the second half at the 64:05 mark when her corner kick got passed the goalie. This marks the second-straight week that Vasseen has scored.
Calvin answered five minutes later to inch their way closer to the Bulldog's lead before Barker recorded the clincher.
The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Knights 18-13. On defense, junior goalie Chayna Wallace gathered in five saves.
Adrian, who currently is first in the MIAA, is back in action when it hosts Hope at noon at Performance Stadium. Follow the game action here.
