Stiff Defense Blanks the Belles 3-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Adrian College women's soccer team, under the guidance of head coach Ali Alamdari, tied the school record for most wins in a single-season as it won its 12th match of the year with a 3-0 victory over Saint Mary's today (10/18). Adrian previously had 12 wins in 2002.

With the win, Adrian improves to 12-4 overall and 10-2 in the conference, giving Adrian its first double digit conference win total in program's history. With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 8-7 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Adrian goalie Chayna Wallace and its defense led by All-MIAA Kellie Irwin now has six shutouts on the season, while holding their opponents scoreless in four of the last six matches.

The Lady Bulldogs scored their first goal of game at the 30:46 minute mark when Aly Masciovecchio capitalized off a corner kick with a shot to Patti Vaassen who would score with a one-timer, giving Adrian a 1-0 lead. This marked Vaassen's first goal of the year.

The score would remain the same at halftime. Adrian's defense held the Belles shotless through a half of play with a 6-0 advantage.

Freshman sensation Ellery Karsten added to Adrian's lead right out of the gate with a header from the ride side of the box, about a minute and a half into the second half, for her fifth goal of the season. Erin Weide set up the play with a well-executed cross.

Adding late insurance was All-MIAA Sam Barker at the 70:14 mark. Barker made a move past the defender and got off a nice shot from inside of the box for the score. She now has 16 on the year.

The Lady Bulldogs looks to continue its hunt for the top spot of the MIAA as they travel to Calvin on Thursday (Oct. 20) at 4:00 p.m.
