ADRIAN, Mich. – A fight for the best Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) record took place at Performance Stadium today (Oct. 1), as the Adrian College women's soccer team hosted Calvin College. The Lady Bulldogs came out victorious with a convincing 3-1 win. The win puts Adrian 5-1 in the MIAA, tying Alma College for the best conference record and currently shares first place with Alma in the standings.
The Lady Bulldogs put the first point on the board when freshman Erin Weide paved her way through three of the Knights' defenders and made an exceptional cross to junior Lauren Cozzi in front of the box. Cozzi would capitalize on the opportunity and would place the ball in the back of net.
With less than five minutes remaining before intermission, Calvin scored the equalizer when Kelly Koets snuck one by Adrian's keeper to the left lower corner of the net. Francesca Smith earned the assist.
In the second half at the 79th minute, Weide would pick up her second assist on the day. This time she found sophomore Sam Barker. From 20 yards out, Barker drilled the ball high to the left post for her team-leading 10th goal on the season.
Cozzi added insurance with her second goal of the game at the 85th minute mark as she made a nice tackle after a Calvin goal kick. This marked Cozzi's second two-goal game of the season and now has a career-high four goals on the year.
In net for Adrian, junior Chayna Wallace accumulated a game-high nine saves in 90 minutes of play.
The Lady Bulldogs looks to make it four-straight wins as they travel to Olivet College on Tuesday. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
