It was a big game for the women's soccer team on Saturday against a gritty Olivet squad as the Bulldogs needed a win to stay in the middle of the pack in the MIAA standings. The Bulldogs (9-4-2, 3-3) picked up a 2-1 win over the Comets (12-3-2, 3-2-1) at Performance Stadium in a very physical matchup. Both teams really came to play and it showed on the field as the players went all out to get a win. Adrian snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-1-1 at home this season.
The Bulldogs came out strong and put pressure on Olivet right away. Anika Johnson had a good scoring chance just 1:40 into the contest but her shot went just above the crossbar. AC took a 1-0 lead at 5:15 as Sam Barker scored her team-leading 16th goal of the season on a beautiful shot from 30 yards out which was placed in the top right corner over the outstretched Alyssa Budros. Patti Vaassen was credited with the assist. AC outplayed OC during the first 25 minutes and held a 2-0 edge in shots on goal. Bethany Cousino nearly gave Adrian a two-goal lead at 34:29 as her shot hit the right post from the left wing. Olivet did not record a shot in the first 45 minutes.
Vaassen put Adrian ahead 2-0 at the 50:59 mark as she lofted a direct free kick from about 20 yards out from the far left wing over the head of Budros. It was Vaassen's first goal of the season and seemed to put Adrian in control of the match. Olivet from that point seemed to wake up a little and put pressure on the Bulldog defense. Elizabeth Julian gave Olivet a glimmer of hope at 59:47 as she scored her 16th goal of the season to tie Barker for the MIAA lead. Julian got a break as Stevie Burns came out and attempted to catch the ball but it ricocheted off her hands and onto the foot of Julian who buried it from 10 yards straight on the goal.
Olivet continued to bring up their offensive pressure in the final 20 minutes but Adrian withstood the onslaught for the victory. The Comets and Bulldogs each had five shots on goal with Olivet's all coming in the second half. Burns made four saves to improve to 2-1 in goal.
