ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Bulldogs met the Vikings of Augustana College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. These teams met in a rematch of the March 15 contest in which the Vikings took out the Bulldogs, 21-10. This was the Bulldogs fourth straight trip to the NCAA tournament as they looked to advance to the second round for the second straight year. The Bulldogs came out fighting as they traded goals with Augustana for the first 30 minutes. A quick start to the second half left Adrian behind and they could not recover as the Bulldogs fell, 22-14. This loss puts the Bulldogs 2014 overall record at 12-6.
The first half saw the Bulldogs fight hard as they traded goals with the Vikings throughout the first half. The Vikings took the early 1-0 lead before TaShina Salas tied the game at the 28:14 mark. Adrian then took the lead at the 26:23 mark when Christine Campbell scored unassisted. The Vikings then charged back as they scored the next two goals of the game to take a 4-3 lead. The teams would trade goals before Augustana opened up an 11-8 lead at the 10:52 mark. The Vikings would score two more before the half, but the Bulldogs would score once more at the 5:09 mark. Salas scored once again and the teams went to the half with a 13-9 score in favor of the Vikings. Salas scored four goals, Maddie Dugan and Hannah Early each scored twice while Campbell added a goal.
The second half saw the Vikings add to their lead early with the first four goals as they took a 17-9 lead with 24:34 left in the game. The Bulldogs continued to fight as Salas scored on a free-position shot at the 23:25 mark to leave the score at 17-10. The Bulldogs continued to battle with the Vikings as they countered another Viking goal at the 15:16 mark as Dugan scored unassisted to put the score at 18-11. The Vikings continued their scoring with four more goals, but the Bulldogs did not quit as Dugan would add two more goals and Salas would tack on another to leave the final score at 22-14 in favor of Augustana.
Salas scored six goals and added an assist. Dugan scored five goals to accompany one assist. Early scored two goals, Campbell scored once and Brianna Plester tallied seven draw controls while adding one assist.
Jul Tehovnik (12-6) made the start in goal for Adrian as she made three saves and recorded two ground balls.
