LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The city of glitz and glamour did not provide a favorable outcome for the Adrian College women's lacrosse team on Monday, Feb. 27 with a 7-6 overtime loss at Occidental College. The low-scoring affair benefitted the home team who improved to 3-1 overall while Adrian evened their record at 1-1.
The weather was rainy and cold (for LA at least) as the Bulldogs trailed 4-3 at intermission and then forced overtime by outscoring the Tigers 3-2 in the second half. Rachel Johnston had a pair of goals as did Heather Newblom. Cassie Hoyez and Meghan Gerrie also scored for Adrian. It was Gerrie's first collegiate goal. Occidental scored on two free-position shots in the first half taken by Sarah Kessler.
The Bulldogs took a 5-4 lead with the first two goals of the second half. Newblom scored at 21:22 from Meghan Reynolds and Johnston's unassisted goal at 17:26 gave AC their first lead of the day. The Tigers came back to score back-to-back goals from Haley Gandsey at 16:37 and Tori Larson at 11:32 to regain the one-goal lead at 6-5. Gerrie's goal came with 4:23 left in regulation from Lindsey Day to send it into the extra session.
Larson was the hero in overtime at 4:39 unassisted to give the host Tigers a big win. Laura Finfrock took the loss in net for the Bulldogs making two saves. Stacey Birlson led the team with five ground balls. Johnston led the team with four shots on net.
