Women's Lacrosse Welcomes Strong Recruiting Class

ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College first-year head coach Rachel Cibulas has announced the addition of six newcomers to the roster for the 2011-12 campaign. Joining the Bulldogs are freshmen Ashton Cole (Saline, Mich./Saline HS), Kelsey DeRidder (Northville, Mich./Northville HS), Meghan Gerrie (Fergus, Ont./Western Reserve Academy), Maddie McDonald (Whitby, Ont./Father Leo J. Austin), Michelle Sandlin (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk HS) and Riley Weidle (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS).

"I'm very excited to announce the Adrian women's lacrosse class of 2015," said Cibulas. "They bring a tremendous amount of athleticism, speed and experience to our team. They will complement our current team very well and I see them making an immediate impact on the field. Their hard work in the weight room and on the field will definitely add more depth to our versatile team. I'm expecting great things for our team this season."

ASHTON COLE: 5-4, Freshman, Goaltender, Saline, Mich. (Saline HS)

Cole is entering her freshman year at Adrian after playing high school lacrosse at Saline High School in Saline, Michigan. She finished her senior high school season with a save percentage of .616% and had the sixth most saves in Michigan High School play.

Prior to her senior season, Cole played in Huntsville, Alabama. There she was the team captain for the Huntsville Havoc, her area high school team. She also received recognition in her junior year with All-State honors for the state of Alabama. Ashton also played for BamaLax, a travel team out of Birmingham, Alabama during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. Cole received recognition as Most Valuable Player after BamaLax won the Derek Pieper Memorial Tournament in 2009. She also participated in the US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament for Team Georgia in 2009 and 2010. 

KELSEY DeRIDDER: 5-6, Freshman, Midfield, Northville, Mich. (Northville HS)

DeRidder has been playing lacrosse since the eighth grade and went to tryouts at Northville High School with a broken arm, hand and wrist. She made the varsity squad as a freshman and was a varsity starter at the beginning of her sophomore year. She worked hard and at the end of her sophomore year she was voted by her peers to be the only junior captain. DeRidder continued to work hard and was captain as a senior. Her senior year, she was given the MVP award by her coaches along with All-State Honorable Mention honors and All-Conference Honors. She was second on her team in goals and eleventh in the state of Michigan.

MEGHAN GERRIE: 5-4, Freshman, Fergus, Ont. (Western Reserve Academy)

Meghan joined the WRA pioneers in 2009 as a new sophomore with a starting position every game. In her junior year, she was recognized with Second Team All-Midwest Honors, Midwest WPA-OHIO Region Honors, became a member of the 2010 All-Tournament Team (MSLA) and was named the 2011 season captain. That summer she also competed at the Ontario Summer Games in Sudbury, Ont., where her team, the Orangeville Northmen U19 Women's Field Lacrosse Team (of which she has been a member since 2004) were Ontario champions. Her senior year at WRA she led the team to a winning season and was awarded offensive MVP and All-District Honorable Mention. This past summer she also participated on the Orangeville Northmen Senior team who won the Ontario Championship.

MADDIE MCDONALD:  5-3, Freshman, Goaltender, Whitby, Ont., (Father Leo J. Austin CSS)

Maddie McDonald joins the Bulldogs for the 2012 season from Whitby, Ont., Canada. McDonald played for the U19 Canadian National Women's Field Lacrosse Team as one of the top two goalies in all of Canada. Captain of her high school team in her junior and senior year, she also played seven years on the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights club team earning three Provincial Championships in 2007, 2009 and 2011 as well as a Bronze medal in 2008.

McDonald not only excelled in lacrosse, but had stellar accomplishments in ice hockey as well. She played hockey for ten years, playing on the top-level rep team for seven years and obtaining two Provincial Gold Medals, two League Championships, and a Provincial Silver Medal as well as many tournament championships. 
Michelle Sandlin, 5-9, Freshman, Midfield, Baltimore, Md. (Dundalk HS)

In Sandlin's career with the Owls she was a four-year varsity starter and was the leading scorer for her junior and senior year. In her senior seasonn she was named Captain, MVP, All-Baltimore County and First Team All-Division. She was also named First Team All-Division her junior year, and Second Team All-Division during her sophomore and freshman seasons. Sandlin was recruited by the Bulldogs from the Skywalkers club team.

Riley Weidle: 5-8, Freshman, Defender, Westlake Village, Calif. (Westlake HS)

Weidle is entering her freshman year at Adrian after starting three years on the Thousand Oaks varsity level club program. Weidle began playing lacrosse in sixth grade in Snohomish, Wash. and continued after moving to California prior to her freshman season in 2008. She was named team captain for Thousand Oaks each of her high school years and was honored as Most Valuable Player her sophomore and junior years.
