Women's Hockey Falls in Final Minute of Overtime

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The top-ranked Adrian College women's hockey team fell in the last minute of overtime in game two of the East-West Hockey Classic to host and third-ranked Norwich University 5-4 on Monday, Jan. 7.

Final Score: No. 3 Norwich 5, No. 1 Adrian 4

Location: Northfield, Vt. (Kreitzberg Arena)

Records: Adrian 11-3, Norwich 11-3

Norwich took the lead early when Kelley Madden intercepted a breakout pass in the Adrian zone and put a backhander into the back of the net. The Bulldogs would answer on the power play when freshman Julia Barrett scored her second goal of the season at the 8:25 mark. Senior captain Tory Harshman corralled a breakout at the half-boards and found sophomore forward Brooke Schembri coming around the net. Schembri took a shot that was blocked but she was able to get her own rebound and found Barrett wide open on the backdoor.

The Cadets would take the lead again with just over four minutes remaining when Bryn Labbe's shot found its way through traffic and past the goal line for the 2-1 lead. AC answered two minutes later to tie the game up when Harshman netted her team leading eighth goal of the season. Schembri chipped a puck off the boards in the defensive zone to Harshman in the neutral zone. Harshman skated with the puck to the redline before firing a saucer pass that skipped over the defender's stick and right to junior forward Maggie Mitter. Mitter gained the zone and waited for the last defender to overcommit before sliding the puck back to Harshman in the slot for the goal and the 2-2 tie heading into the second.

Adrian would open the scoring in the second period for its only lead of the game. Freshman Annalise Andrews won a draw in the offensive zone to sophomore forward Neysa Miller. Miller helped the puck back to junior defenseman Kelly O'Sullivan at the point. O'Sullivan fired the puck on net and it hit a Norwich defender and deflected past the goalie for the 3-2 Bulldog lead. The Cadets would tie the game shortly after with a shorthanded goal, which would be the final goal of the second stanza for a 3-3 tie heading into the third. Norwich would retake the lead less than two minutes into the final frame and the score would stand at 4-3 for the majority of the third. With the goalie pulled, the Black and Gold found a way to tie the game in the last minute when Mitter buried a loose puck in a net-front scramble with 34 seconds left, sending the game into overtime.

Almost the entire overtime period went by without a goal before the Cadets ended the game with 53.1 seconds remaining in the extra period. It would be Madden getting the bookend goals of the game for Norwich, as she found a bouncing puck at the goalmouth and put it past the sprawled goaltender for the win.

This is the first time the Bulldogs have lost back-to-back games this season and the first time since last year when Adrian lost three consecutive games, starting with the East-West Classic a year ago.

• Barrett, Harshman, O'Sullivan, and Mitter all scored for the Bulldogs, with O'Sullivan netting her first of the season.

• Schembri, Harshman, Mitter, Miller, Andrews, and senior Kortney Diaz tallied assists, with Harshman and Schembri each helping on two goals.

• Sophomore goaltender Kate Turner finished with 32 saves.

• Madden, Labbe, Kirsten Watts, and Maddi Blauth scored for the Cadets, with Madden scoring the opening goal and game-winning goal of the contest.

• Sophie McGovern, Brynn Wopperer, Watts, and KC Herne each added an assist.

• Emily Lambert stopped 35 of 39 shots in the win.

The Bulldogs return home to host Trine in a non-conference game on Saturday at 7 p.m. before traveling up north for a weekend series at Finaldia on Jan. 19-20.
