ADRIAN, MICH. - The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Slaats Cup Championship Weekend will be held at Arrington Ice Arena on the campus of Adrian College on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3, 2018. Friday's game will be between the No. 3 seed St. Scholastica and the No. 2 seed Lake Forest. The Bulldogs--as the top seed--get a bye to the finals and will face the winner of Friday night's game on Saturday.
Adrian comes into the championship weekend with a 21-5-1 overall record. The Bulldogs finished the conference season with a 16-1-1 mark to earn their fourth straight Kronschnabel Trophy. Adrian hosted six-seeded Marian in the quarterfinals last weekend and swept the Sabres 4-0 and 3-0 to advance to championship weekend.
Sophomore blue-liner Kelly O'Sullivan (Inverness, Ill.) leads Adrian with 28 points (7,21). She has scored three power-play goals and one game-winner. O'Sullivan earned two NCHA Player of the Week awards (one offensive, one defensive) and three selections on the D3hockey.com team of the week.
Junior Tory Harshman (Owen Sound, Ontario) and senior Kristi Zink (Canton, Mich.) are two other scoring leaders for Adrian. Harshman has tallied 26 points (13,13) and was named to the D3hockey.com team of the week. Zink was named the team captain for this season and has registered 25 points (4,21).
Freshman goalie Kate Turner (Houston, Texas) has compiled a 20-5-1 record and has tied the Adrian College season record for wins in a season. She leads all NCAA Division III goalies with 11 shutouts this season--also an Adrian College program record. Turner has been honored twice as the NCHA Defensive Player of the Week and one selection to the D3hockey.com team of the week.
Adrian met St. Scholastica in the regular season in a two-game series at Arrington Ice Arena. The two teams tied 1-1 in game one before the Bulldogs dominated game two with an 11-0 win. Adrian swept Lake Forest this season in a two-game weekend series--also held at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs won the first game 4-2 before completing the sweep with a 5-2 win in game two.
Abby Sawyer (17+11=28), Alexia Klaas (12+13=25), and Mac Johnson (7+15=22) are the scoring leaders for the Saints. Lexi Thomeczek (10-5-3) leads the team with a .933 save percentage and 2.18 goals against average.
For the Foresters, Olivia Spellmire (21+26=47), Amy Budde (16+19=35), and Sydney Simone (10+25=35) are the top scorers. Jacque Rogers (13-4-0) has tallied a .938 save percentage and 1.17 goals against average.
All three teams are among the top statistical leaders in NCAA DIII: scoring offense (LF is 2nd with 5.19 G/GM; AC is 7th with 4.15 G/GM; CSS is 10th with 3.30 G/GM), scoring defense (AC is 2nd allowing 1.00 G/GM; LF is 13th allowing 1.59 G/GM; CSS is 28th allowing 2.33 G/GM), Scoring Margin (LF is 3rd with 3.59; AC is 5th with 3.15; CSS is 16th with 0.96), Power Play (AC is 2nd with 32/107, 29.9%; LF is 3rd with 33/112, 29.5%; CSS is 17th with 27/146, 18.5%), and penalty kill (AC is 4th with 106/116, 91.4%; LF is 16th with 76/87, 87.4%; CSS is 30th with 84/99, 84.8%).
The winner of the Slaats Cup will receive the NCHA's automatic berth in the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship.
