ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs rebounded from their tough loss at the hands of St. Scholastica Friday by overwhelming Finlandia University with 10 goals on 61 shots. Adrian dominated all 60 minutes of play as they improved their record to 17-4 on the season in 10-4 in the NCHA.
The first period went scoreless despite Adrian pelting Finlandia with 18 shots while allowing only 3.
The Second period saw the Lions take a quick 1-0 lead as they scored on a power play opportunity just 49 seconds into the period. The Bulldogs used this as a spark as they went on to score six goals before the Lions could respond as they carried a 6-1 lead into the second intermission. Hannah McGowan scored to tie the game just 17 seconds after the Lions took the early lead. This was followed by two Kristin Lewicki goals including her fifth shorthanded goal of the season at the 4:21 mark. Michelle Jones and Sarah Shureb each scored to take the lead to 5-1, and senior defenseman Alix Vallee scored on a power play opportunity with 5:11 left in the period. The Bulldogs continued this momentum through the remainder of the period as they carried a sufficient lead into the final period.
The final period saw the Bulldogs score four more goals before the Lions could respond as they took their lead to 10-1. Vallee and Jones each scored their second of the game to take the lead to 8-1. These goals were followed closely by goals from Emily Duncan and Devyn Fitzhenry to increase the lead to nine with 7:52 remaining. The Bulldogs carried this lead until the final minute when Finlandia capitalized on a five-on-three power play to score their second of the game. Adrian secured their victory with ease by an eight goal margin, 10-2.
Kelsey Kusch tallied four assists. McGowan and Vallee each compiled three assists and senior captain Lauren Turner recorded two. Fitzhenry, Lewicki, Sydney Dobbin, Audrey Noles, McKenzie Carey, Lexie Tzafaroglou, and Cara Harm each tallied an assist.
Vallee set the single game record for points in a game by a defenseman for Adrian as she tallied five points on the afternoon. Kusch set the Adrian College single season record for assists as her four assist performance brought her total to 22. Kusch also took over the national scoring lead as she brought her season point total to 40 on 18 goals and 22 assists.
Brooke Gibson made the start in the net for Adrian and made 10 stops on the way to improving her record to 6-1.
The Bulldogs will see action again February 7 when they host St. Norbert at 4 p.m. This game will be the final regular season home game for Adrian in 2013-14.
