ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs met the St. Scholastica Friday night in a Battle for 1st place in the NCHA. The two teams came into the game tied at 18 points a piece in the NCHA as they looked to break the deadlock atop the standings. Adrian travelled to Duluth, Minnesota back on December 6-7 and found the better of the Saints as they topped St. Scholastica 3-2 in the final meeting of the weekend. Adrian came out firing in hopes to repeat that victory as they fired 39 shots on goal to just 13 from the Saints. St. Scholastica capitalized on their best scoring chance of the night and the Bulldogs could not find the back of the net as the Saints won the game in a hard fought 1-0 decision. The loss ends the Bulldogs 10 game win streak and leaves them at 16-4 on the season and 9-4 in the NCHA.
The first period was a defensive struggle as the teams kept shots at a minimum. The Bulldogs then turned up the heat as they showed their offensive presence and fired 15 shots on goal to just four from the Saints. The teams ended the period tied, 0-0.
The second period saw more Adrian domination as they continued to bombard the Saints with shots. Adrian then found themselves in a 5-3 power play chance starting at the 11:11 mark but St. Scholastica fought off all of the Adrian chances as they killed the penalty and the teams once again ended the period in a 0-0 tie.
The third period saw the Bulldogs in a fight as the Saints turned an Adrian turnover into an offensive rush. The Saints fired a shot on goal after a rush up the left side and a costly rebound turned into a Saints goal and the Bulldogs trailed 1-0 with 11:03 left on the clock. The Bulldogs turned up the heat once again as they found themselves with scoring opportunities and despite hearing shots ring of the pipe, the Bulldogs could not score. The Saints fended off the Adrian attack, and secured the victory 1-0.
Jade Walsh made the start in the net for Adrian as she made 12 stops and held the Saints to 0-5 on the power play. The loss drops her to 11-3 on the season.
Adrian will see action again tomorrow, Saturday, February 1 when they host Finlandia University at 2 p.m. This game will recognize the contributions of seniors Alix Vallee, Lauren Turner and Danielle Smith.
