DETROIT, Mich. -- In the final competition of the season on Saturday at Coastal Cheerleading Master Championship, the Co-ed Cheerleading Team finished second falling to Alma College. Assistant Coach Holly Petry, changed the Co-ed Cheerleading routine specifically for this competition, incorporating more difficulty. Unfortunately, the changes were not executed as well as hoped by the team, causing them to have 6.50 point value deductions from falls and missed tumbling passes.
The Co-ed's team final score was 67.40, where as Alma
College score was 72.80. "This was a great effort by the co-ed
team", said head coach Regina Smith. "The team should be very proud
of themselves. I am very proud of the team, they have truly
improved from August." With the Co-ed Cheerleading Team season
finished, open tryouts for Co-ed Sideline Cheerleading is April 20,
On Sunday, March 24 the All-Girl Cheerleading team headed to Grand Valley State University to perform their last time at a competition before departing to National Cheerleading Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida. The team had two of their teammates with illnesses, and was only able to perform part of their routine.
"This was great for the girls to experience this tribulation this late in the season. It opened their eyes to understand every teammate is important, and I truly believe they now know they can achieve and do all things through Christ who strengthens them," Smith states.
Although the team only did exhibition routines at Grand Valley State University, they were still judged by the judging panel on the skill sets they performed. "It was great to see how high our scores were without performing stunts, pyramids and tosses. To know we were less than 10 points away from the lowest score of the competition, speaks volume to the performance and execution ability of the team," states Smith.
"I am really looking forward in how well we will perform at nationals", said captain Lauren Wantroba. The All-Girl Team along with the Dance Team will do a show off on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Merillat Center at 4 p.m., performing their routines one last time before they depart to Florida.
