Big Second Half Propels Women's Basketball Past Finlandia Lions, 81-62

ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian College outscored visiting Finlandia University 48 to 32 in the second half to pull away for an 81-62 non-conference women's basketball victory on Sunday afternoon.

= Junior Ashley Morris led all scorers with 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished five assists--all team highs. She shot 9 for 15 from the field, including three treys.

= Sophomore Shannon Garvey scored 14 points, had seven rebounds and made four assists.

= Classmate Aly Kubik had another strong performance on the glass (she collected a career-best 16 rebounds against St. Mary's on Saturday for the 10th-most in the program's single-game history) with eight on the afternoon. She also netted 13 points, which was one shy of her season high.

= Sophomore Angelina Goosby sparked the defense when she came off the bench to get three steals (a game high), nine points and four rebounds in just 13 minutes of action.

= Julia Daavettila (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Kelsie Richards (15, 12) both registered double doubles. The latter was 10 for 11 from the free throw stripe.

= Molly Berg dished a game-best six assists and scored five points from her point guard position.

= Adrian took a slim 33-30 lead into the halftime break, shooting just 32 percent from the field. But the Bulldogs put on the afterburners in the second half, outscoring the Lions by 16 points and shooting 52.5 percent from the floor over the last two quarters.

= For the game, the Bulldogs tamed the Lions from the field by limiting the visitors to 30.3 percent (20-for-66) and 21.9 percent from three-point land (7-for-32).

= The biggest difference in the game was a strong Adrian defense that generated 10 steals to get 18 points off 17 FU turnovers.

= Adrian also forced itself inside by outscoring Finlandia by a 40-20 margin in the paint. With 21 of 48 rebounds coming on offense, the Bulldogs enjoyed 23 second-chance points.

= Adrian never trailed in the game. Daavettila converted a layup to make it 8-8 with 2 minutes and 56 seconds left in the opening quarter. Freshman Rachel Bucher scored her only points of the day to put the 'Dogs ahead to stay on the counter. 

= The Bulldogs turned a three-point halftime advantage into a 49-33 cushion with a 16-3 run to open the second half. Garvey ignited the rally with eight points on a couple 3balls and jumper.

= The Bulldogs now lead their Upper Peninsula neighbors in the all-time series, 3-0. The teams also met in 2012 and 2014.

= Finlandia is a member of the new American Collegiate Athletic Association.

= Richards has 398 rebounds in her Lions career. Daavettila has 486 career caroms.

= In the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Garvey is tied for second in scoring with 16.0 points per game and third in three-point field goal percentage at 41.9.

= Adrian has won four of its last five outings after a 0-2 start.

= The team's nine turnovers are a season low--the fewest by the Bulldogs since the 2014-15 season opener at Wooster (a 79-74 win).

= The Bulldogs are 2-0 this season when recording 50 rebounds or more in a game. They had 48 today. Adrian also established a season high with 16 assists and notched a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the first time.

= Adrian wraps up a four-game homestand on Wednesday against Kalamazoo College in a MIAA encounter here at the MSFC. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
