Women's Basketball Blitzes Past Olivet Comets in Home Opener, 81-58

ADRIAN, Mich.--Junior Mariah Jackson scored a career-high 17 points, and classmate Starnisha Harris recorded an Adrian season-high seven steals to go along with 12 points, as the Bulldogs won their home opener over Olivet, 81-68, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Jackson came off the bench to hit on 6 of 11 field goal attempts, including 2-for-5 from three-point land. Her previous personal record is 14 points. She added four assists, four rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes of action.

= Harris, a junior college transfer out of Oakland Community College, also came off the bench to play 18 minutes, rounding out the stat line with four rebounds and three assists.

= Sophomore Ashley Morris led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds and she tied Jackson with a game-high four assists.

= Senior Kennedy Kunce contributed eight points, six rebounds and two assists.

THE OPPOSITION
Kali Hancock came off the Olivet bench to lead all student-athletes with 18 points, including five 3-pointers, in 21 minutes.

= Starter Jazmin Hildebrand had a double-double of 16 points and game-high 14 rebounds.

Katie McKinnon chipped in five points, six rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian held Olivet to 27.5 percent field goal shooting (19-69) and forced 25 turnovers that resulted in 30 free points.

= Olivet won the glass with a 53-42 rebounding edge and outscored Adrian 25-9 on second-chance points with 22 offensive rebounds.

= The Bulldogs attacked the basket evidenced by 48 points in the paint (Olivet had 20) and outscoring the Comets 14-0 in fastbreak points.

= The Comets took their only lead of the afternoon when T'Keyia Collins deflected the opening tip she won up to McKinnon, who made the easy lay-in.

= Back-to-back layups by freshmen Alyssa Kubik (6 points, 3 rebounds) and Angelina Goosby (8, 4) gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with 8 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

= Adrian led 18-12 after 10 minutes and 37-25 at the halftime break.

= In the second half, Olivet managed to get within six points, 40-34, on a Jillian Nickels 3ball with 6:03 left in the third quarter.

= Adrian freshman Shannon Garvey (6 points, 3 rebounds) made a lay-in to spark a 13-7 run that resulted in the Bulldogs going up 53-41 after 30 minutes.

= The Bulldogs were never threatened in the fourth, leading by double-digits the whole time.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The Bulldogs are 4-0 when scoring 80 points in a game this season

= Adrian is 12-13 in home openers under Coach Kathy Morris.

= Today marked the latest in the season that Adrian played its first home game since Dec. 10, 1981 when the Bulldogs hosted Lewis University (an 81-54 loss).

= The Comets came into the contest leading the MIAA averaging 23.3 three-point attempts (.171 3FG%), and this afternoon they put up 32 shots (making 8 for a .250 percentage).

= Olivet has lost eight straight dating to last season; the last win occurred on Feb. 20, 2016 when the Comets defeated Adrian, 80-68, in Olivet.

= Adrian passed very well to the tune of 20 assists--a season high--on 31 made field goals. And the 16 steals ties a season high, set on Nov. 18 at Allegheny (88-79 win). And turned the ball over only 11 times, a season low.

= The Bulldogs snapped an eight-game losing streak to Olivet, and now leads the Comets in the all-time series 68-28; Adrian is 38-15 at home.
