Cold Shooting Stymies Women's Basketball in Greg Richards '00 Memorial Tip-Off Tournament Finale

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Adrian College women's basketball team was dealt its first setback of the season on Saturday as Grove City College won 79-63 to wrap up the Greg Richards '00 Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Marissa Cotton came off the bench to lead the team with 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor. She added three rebounds, four assists and two steals in 23 minutes of action.

= Freshman Sadia Johnson contributed 12 points, including three 3-pointers.

= Junior Starnisha Harris led Adrian with five rebounds.

THE OPPOSITION
Kate Balcom was one of four GCC starters in double digits with a game-high 22 points, making 7-of-11 field goal attempts and 8 of 12 free throw tries. She also tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds, dished three assists, had three steals and blocked a shot.

= Laura Buchanan added 12 points, followed by Jackie Stewart and Lexie Arkwright with 10 each.

= Arkwright had a game-high-tying seven rebounds and Stewart led all student-athletes with five assists. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Grove City shot 57.7 percent (30-52) from the field while holding Adrian to season lows of 37.7 percent field goal shooting (26-69) and 63 points.

= The Wolverines led for most of the game which featured just one tie and one lead change.

= A freshman Shannon Garvey lay-in to open the scoring gave the Bulldogs their first lead and classmate Angelina Goosby made it 3-2 on a free throw.

= But Stewart converted a lay-up as GCC took the lead for good at 4-3 with 6 minutes and 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

= The Wolverines led by as many as 21 points in the fourth, 64-43, at 7:30 on the clock.

= Adrian, however, wouldn't go away and managed to whittle down the deficit to within three possessions, 70-61 less than 2 minutes to go. Junior Mariah Jackson keyed Adrian's comeback bid as she sparked the 18-6 run by scoring her only points of the game with a 3ball and jumper on back-to-back possessions. Sophomore Ashley Morris scored seven of her nine points during the stretch.

= The Bulldogs were forced to foul and GCC by 9 of 10 free throws over the last 1:19 to seal the win.

= The Wolverines shot nearly 70 percent from the field to take a commanding 41-24 halftime advantage.

= Despite the loss, Adrian outrebounded an opponent (39-32) for the second time in three outings this season.

= Grove City outscored Adrian in the paint, 42-32, and 19-8 off turnovers.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Grove City College is affiliated with the NCAA Division III Presidents' Athletic Conference.

= Today marked the first meeting ever between the two schools.

UP NEXT
= Adrian continues the non-conference docket on Tuesday when the Bulldogs go crosstown to play at NAIA-scholarship Siena Heights University. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m.
