ALMA, Mich.--Senior Antoinea McElroy led all scorers with 21 points and junior Kennedy Kunce pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds to carry the Adrian College women's basketball team to a 63-53 victory Saturday at Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at Art Smith Arena.
Adrian snaps a three-game losing streak to improve to 8-9 on the season and 5-4 in the MIAA, while the Scots slip to 6-11 overall and 1-8 in the league.
Kaitlyn Kendall led Alma with 18 points and six rebounds, and Kelsey Wolffis chipped in 11 and seven, respectively. Wolffis added four blocked shots and two steals.
Wolffis gave the hosts a brief 2-0 lead, but McElroy and Kunce combined to score Adrian's next 12 points as the Bulldogs went ahead 12-4 to stay. The Bulldogs scored nine of the next 12 points to go up 21-7 after the first quarter.
Adrian outscored Alma 15-10 in the second to stretch its lead to 41-22 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs maintained their double-digit cushion.
Alma, however, made things interesting in the fourth, pulling within four points, 57-53, on Kendall's 3-pointer with 1 minute and 24 seconds left in the contest. On Adrian's ensuing possession, Kunce collected an offensive rebound and McElroy drained a triple of her own to seal the win.
A junior college transfer from Taft College in California, Kunce reached her high-water mark for rebounds in an AC uniform and tacked on eight points.
Adrian was able to offset an Alma edge of 19-9 points off turnovers by getting 23 second-chance points to the Scots' 12. The Bulldogs also won the glass, 46-31
Adrian is back in action on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) against Trine at home for another MIAA encounter.
