ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs played their first home game Saturday afternoon in a nonconference match up with the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears. Ohio Northern carried a 37-23 half time lead, but the Bulldogs bounced back in the second half to force overtime. The Polar Bears outlasted Adrian in the five-minute overtime period as the Bulldogs could not complete their comeback and fell, 87-80.
The Bulldogs started the game slow as they trailed the entire first half with their deficit climbing to as many as 18. Adrian kept their heads up as they kept battling to a 37-23 halftime score. The Bulldogs were led by Brigitte Zavithsanos as she totaled nine points, three assists and four steals in the initial 20 minute period.
Adrian then found their stride to begin the second half as they opened up with a 16-3 run over the first 5:54 of the half to battle right back into the game. The Bulldogs then used this momentum to secure their first lead of the game, 51-50, with 9:26 left on the clock. This resulted in back and forth play for the remainder of the half as the teams traded leads and looked to take the victory in regulation. The Bulldogs found themselves ahead as only three seconds remained on the clock, but a Bulldog foul resulted in a pair of Ohio Northern free throws and the Polar Bears forced overtime.
The overtime period saw Ohio Northern take the initial lead and slowly pull away as the Bulldogs continued to battle. Adrian fell short as the Polar Bears took out the Bulldogs, 87-80.
Zavithsanos compiled 23 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists for the game. Marissa Cotton recorded 16 points and five rebounds while Jorden York tallied 11 points to give Adrian three starters in double digit scoring for the game. Amber McCullough came off of the bench to total 12 points and seven rebounds.
