ADRIAN, Mich. – The first couple of minutes for the women's basketball team against Calvin College was very promising on Wednesday. The Bulldogs were up 15-9 at the 13:43 mark and forced a 30-second timeout by Calvin. Adrian scored the first five points of the game and did trail in the early going. After that early lead however the Knights used an inside game and full-court press to end the half with a 35-11 run and a 44-26 lead at intermission. The Knights upon further inspection outscored the Bulldogs 20-4 in the final 7:05 of the opening half.
Calvin increased their lead to as many as 35 points in the second half with 9:20 left, but Adrian closed the gap to 18 points at 73-55 with 2:49 to go. Turnovers were a bug-a-boo for the Bulldogs with 21 that led to 25 Calvin points. The Knights also held a 46-30 edge inside the paint as Breanna Verkaik had 16 points and teammate Hannah Acre chipped in 12 off the pine.
Adrian shot 34.9 percent for the game from the floor including 39.4 percent in the second half. The Bulldogs went 14-of-20 from the free throw line and also made six three-pointers on the night. Senior LaQwana Dockery led the team with 18 points and also had a double-double with 10 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Lauren Rhoads tossed in 17 points and grabbed four rebounds in 35 minutes. The Bulldogs are 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA and will host Olivet on Saturday at 3 p.m.
