GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Adrian College women's basketball team (7-16, 6-9) ran into a team on a mission Wednesday in an 83-52 loss at No. 2 Calvin (22-1, 15-0). The Knights wrapped up its third straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season title and 14th overall in front of the home crowd at Van Noord Arena.
The Bulldogs were led offensively by junior Lauren Rhoads who scored 12 points including 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 at the foul line in 31 minutes. Junior Casey Fougerousse connected on 4-of-8 (2-of-6 3FG) from the floor and finished with 10 points. Senior Rachael Walker added 10 points in 30 minutes.
Breanna and Carissa Verkaik each had 12 points for the Knights. They combined to shoot 10-of-15 from the floor and grabbed 12 rebounds. Calvin shot 54.5 percent from the floor while the Bulldogs were 32.1 percent. The Knights had a distinct advantage in the paint, 40-16, and off the bench, 43-13.
The Bulldogs move out of the final playoff spot for the MIAA Tournament with the loss as Trine and Alma, both 6-8 in conference entering today, are playing each other in Alma at press time. Adrian will host Alma in the regular season finale on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the annual Pink Zone contest. The team is asking all breast cancer survivors to attend the game for a special pre-game recognition. There are a host of events all afternoon including an alumni game beginning at noon.
