LAS VEGAS, Nev. - There are a lot of one-man shows in Las Vegas but on Thursday it was a one-woman show by Latifah Butler of Goucher College. Butler scored nearly half of her team's points (30) in a 62-60 win over the Bulldogs in the first of two games at Centennial Hills as part of the Las Vegas Hoopla.
Butler went 11-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-14 from the foul line and also grabbed 13 rebounds for Goucher. The Gophers shot 52 percent in the first half and 48.1 percent for the game. Sharnell Huff added 15 points in 40 minutes for Goucher.
The Gophers led for the first 10:09 of the game before Adrian tied the game at 17-17 after a layup by Angela Broggi. The Bulldogs took their first lead at 24-23 with 5:53 left in the opening half after a jumper by Antoinea McElroy.
Adrian (3-6) had the biggest lead of four points at 32-28 with 35 seconds left in the half on a triple by Casey Fougerousse. The Bulldogs remain winless on the road this season (0-6, 0-2 neutral sites).
Adrian held their largest lead of the game 39-32 with 18:33 left in the game after a Lauren Rhoads three-pointer. Rhoads tied a career-high with 17 points. She was 6-of-13 from the floor including 3-of-5 from the arc. Goucher scored the next six points to climb back with one possession and regained the lead at 42-41 on a pair of Huff free throws at the 14:19 mark.
Goucher increased their lead to five points with 12:41 left, but Adrian closed the gap on an 8-2 run to grab a 49-48 lead with 8:59 remaining. The Gophers (4-5) took the lead for good with 4:16 to go but Adrian did have one final shot at winning the game. Rhoads took the game's final shot with two seconds left but it was blocked by Butler to end the game.
McElroy scored nine points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds. LaQwana Dockery scored seven points in 23 minutes also off the bench. Adrian outrebounded Goucher, 43-34, including 18 offensive rebounds by the Bulldogs. Adrian shot 35 percent (21-of-60) for the game including 7-of-19 behind the arc.
