ANDERSON, Ind. - It took five extra minutes, but the women's basketball team improved to 3-5 overall with a 50-44 overtime victory on the road at Anderson University on Wednesday, Dec. 21. The Bulldogs built a very comfortable 12-point lead at 39-27 with 7:08 left in regulation, but went cold from the floor missing their final five field goals to allow the Ravens back into the game.
Anderson (3-6) trailed 22-14 at halftime and looked dead in the water until the final seven minutes of regulation. Amy Wuestefeld helped ignite the comeback as she converted a traditional three-point play to start the rally and cut the game into a single-digit deficit at 39-30. Wuestefeld then hit a triple at the 3:34 mark to cut the lead to 39-35. Hannah Wickard converted a three-point play of her own to cut the lead to 39-38 with 2:28 remaining in regulation.
Katie Ross ended the scoreless drought with a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 41-38 with 1:50 left in the second half. Wuestefeld connected on a clutch triple with 1:00 to go and then Rachael Walker had the final shot for Adrian and missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Jasmine Byers hit a pair of free throws to start overtime which bucked the game's trend to that point as Adrian went 10-of-26 from the charity stripe in the contest. Jenn Headley followed with a jumper in the paint to give Adrian a 45-41 lead with 3:39 left in overtime. Wuestefeld made a pair of free throws and then Kate Barwick split at the line to cut the lead down to 45-44 with 2:59 left in overtime.
Neither team scored for the next two minutes before Headley scored on a layup with 59 seconds left to make it 47-44. Nicole Boggs split at the line with 12 seconds left and Ross sealed it with two free throws with three seconds left to make the final score 50-44. The Ravens were 0-of-4 from the floor and just 3-of-8 at the foul line in overtime.
It was Adrian's fourth straight win over Anderson to even the all-time series at 4-4. It was also Adrian's first overtime victory since an 80-70 win at Kalamazoo on Jan. 13, 2010. There was two ties and just one lead change in the game. Ross scored in double figures for the third straight game and fourth time this season with a team-high 13 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded a steal in 41 minutes. Headley missed the team's last game against Albion but came back with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds in 37 minutes.
