CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Adrian College men's volleyball senior Mike Gold was named the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League's (MCVL) Defensive Player of the Week last week, giving him a weekly award from the conference for the second week in a row.
Gold totaled 15 blocks in two matches last week, helping the Bulldogs split a pair of conference matches. Against Trine on Friday, March 22, he set program records for block assists and total blocks in a single match, assisting on eight blocks and adding a solo stuff to set the record with nine total blocks in the match. The team also set a record for blocks in that match, finishing with 15 team blocks. Gold followed that performance up in the next match, finishing with another six block assists in Adrian's five-set loss to Mount St. Joseph.
This is Gold's second week in a row receiving a weekly award from the MCVL, as he was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week a week ago for hitting over .500 in three straight matches with 34 total kills in the week. He also set a program record for hitting percentage with a mark of .882 in the Bulldogs' sweep of North Park. Overall this is ACMV's fourth Player of the Week award this year, the most the team has ever had in a season.
Adrian is back in action this weekend with a pair of home conference matches against teams currently in the playoff picture. The Bulldogs host North Central on Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. and then Carthage on Saturday at 1 p.m. North Central just dropped out of the national rankings this week but are still receiving votes and Carthage currently sits atop the rankings as the No. 1 team in Division III men's volleyball.
