HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount St. Joseph was in the driver's seat for the entirety of the first half, leading by as many as eight, 24-16. Adrian attempted a late comeback and scored five points in a row but MSJ was able to close the set 25-21 to draw first blood in the match.
Adrian was in the hole again in the second set, down five early at 11-6. This time the comeback would come to fruition as AC would tie the game before falling behind again multiple times, eventually taking the lead, 24-23, and needing only one more point to take the set and even the match. The Bulldogs got that point in the form of a kill from senior Mike Gold to finish the set.
It was a different story in the third set, with the Black and Gold controlling things early and leading by as many as five. That would be the largest lead of the set for Adrian, as AC won the set 25-20 on a kill from junior Noah Marcinkowski to take the lead in the match, two sets to one.
The Lions were determined to force a fifth set and scored five straight to take the lead in the fourth set before another Adrian comeback knotted things up again. The teams traded runs after that, with MSJ getting five of six points in a row and the Bulldogs picking up seven of eight. The score was even at 23 before the Lions won the last two points, capped off by a service ace, to level the match and force a fifth set.
Adrian led early in the fifth set but saw the lead slip away late, with the Lions winning seven of the last nine points to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2 to draw themselves level with the Bulldogs in the MCVL standings.
• Marcinkowski led the offense with 15 kills while Gold joined him in double digits with 10.
• Junior setter Joseph Campana finished with 39 assists in the match.
• Jason Hascher had a match-high 18 kills and was one of four Lions in double digits for kills.
• Rey Sanchez had 56 assists.
• Zack Storc finished with 15 digs and Jack Spohn assisted on nine blocks.
Adrian plays a pair of nationally-ranked programs at home next weekend in the penultimate weekend of action in the regular season. The Bulldogs welcome No. 12 North Central on Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. and then top-ranked Carthage on Saturday at 1 p.m.
