OLIVET, Mich. – The Adrian College men's volleyball team opened its 2019 Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Olivet on Tuesday, Jan. 29. This was the second time the Bulldogs have beaten the Comets this year, as Adrian won 3-1 as part of the Michigan Men's Volleyball Invitational hosted by Adrian College earlier in the year.

Final Score: Adrian 3, Olivet 0 (25-15, 25-22, 29-27)

Location: Olivet, Mich. (Cutler Event Center)

Records: AC 5-3 (1-0 MCVL), OC 0-7 (0-1 MCVL)

Adrian came out on fire to start the match, opening a 10-2 lead and hitting .429% during that stretch before Olivet called a timeout to slow things down. The Bulldogs' lead was never less than seven as AC cruised to a 25-15 set victory in the first set, hitting .333 to the Comets' .080%. The set was capped off by a nice strike up the middle from senior Michael Burkhardt.

Olivet came out stronger in the second set and held a lead in the early stages. Adrian was able to fight back and tie the set at 13-13, forcing the Comets to call a timeout. The timeout didn't work for Olivet as the Black and Gold went up 21-17 before the Comets tried to regroup by calling their second timeout of the set. It was close, but Adrian would get the final four points it needed to secure the second set, 25-22, with set point coming off an Olivet service error. The hitting percentages were much closer in the second set as well, with AC narrowly edging the Comets, .267% to .211%.

The third set was much tighter than the previous two, with neither team able to pull away by more than two until Olivet took a timeout when the Bulldogs went up 15-12. The set continued to be tight after the timeout, with the Comets knotting the score at 20 each before taking a 22-20 lead. Adrian battled back and won the next four points before Olivet prevented the win with a point of their own, making it 24-23, AC. The set continued until a Burkhardt kill sealed the deal for a 29-27 set score and 3-0 match score.

Adrian finished with 10 team blocks to Olivet's six. The Bulldogs also hit better than the Comets, connecting at a .174% to Olivet's .134%. The win gives AC a three-match winning streak, the longest in program history since becoming a varsity sport three seasons ago.

• Burkhardt led the team in kills with nine and hit .467%, his second highest rate of the year.

• Junior Joseph Campana set the pace for the offense, finishing with 23 assists.

• Campana and junior Kevin Curley tied for the team lead in blocks, with 10. Freshman Peyton Doelling led the net defense with six total blocks.

• Brock Pringle led Olivet with 16 kills.

• Jacolb Kelly picked up 33 assists in the match.

• Deivan Prince led the Comets' defense with 10 digs while Pringle finished with three total blocks.
