ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's volleyball team will be hosting the Michigan Men's Volleyball Invitational at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center this weekend, Jan. 11-12. The invitational will feature five men's volleyball programs from across the state of Michigan.
Adrian will be joined by fellow Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League member Olivet, crosstown rival Siena Heights, Lawrence Tech, and Aquinas in the invitational. Bulldog head coach and Siena Heights alum Zak Krug realizes the opportunity men's volleyball has to grow in his home state moving forward. "We are so excited to be hosting this event and look forward to showcasing the sport of men's volleyball that's becoming increasingly popular throughout the state of Michigan and the Midwest as a whole," Krug said. "Being from Michigan myself, I didn't have the opportunity to compete at a high level during my high school career. I had to seek out the opportunities myself, so it's neat to see how much the sport has grown since then."
It was the experience of being from Michigan that helped Krug and his staff formulate the idea for the invitational. "When our coaching staff originally thought about bringing this event to life, we had our Michigan-born student-athletes in mind," Krug continued. "Alex Collins, Mike Gold, and Joey Herrera have really made a name for themselves and found a passion in the sport of men's volleyball and we wanted to honor their hard work and showcase the results."
To help the sport of men's volleyball grow in the state, representatives from the Michigan High School Athletic Association, high school athletic directors and coaches will be in attendance. This will hopefully add more growth to the sport in Michigan and encourage more high schools to offer volleyball as a men's sport going forward.
A total of 10 matches will take place in two gyms at the MSFC over the weekend, starting with Lawrence Tech vs. Adrian and Olivet vs. Aquinas playing at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11 and concluding with the rivalry match of Siena Heights vs. Adrian starting at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Krug notes that the logistics of hosting such a large tournament are not easy. "Our staff and team would like to thank the women's coaching staff of David Kwan and Nick Mackall and the entire women's volleyball team here at Adrian College for helping us organize this event," Krug said. "We'd also like to thank our Athletic Director Mike Duffy and our Sports Information office for all the behind the scenes work they've put in to making the event happen and run smoothly."
Admission will be $10 for adults and $7 for children under 18 and seniors over 55. Each ticket will be good for all matches on that day only. A new ticket will be required for each day.
