WOODSTOCK TWP. — Adrian College representatives were on hand Friday at the former Clearwater Resort Motel at Devils Lake to showcase finalized drawings for its new rowing team headquarters. Click here to read the story written by Dan Cherry, Daily Telegram Staff Writer.

It also served as a meet-and-greet session with the community that surrounds the lake.

"It was such a positive event. Everyone that attended was very positive and excited about the new construction and teams coming. The community was so thankful that we reached out to them for this event," Bulldogs athletics director Mike Duffy said about the success of the community relations social event.

"It really helped many of the community members to understand that we are not here to take over the lake.  We are here to work with them and add another community event that all of them will enjoy.

"It also helped many of them understand about the true schedule of the teams…that we truly will not interfere with their summer activities. I think it brought some sense of relief that we start after Labor Day and finish before Memorial Day, which is well outside their peak enjoyment times."

Adrian men's and women's rowing coach Bart Thompson added: "I thought the event went even better than I could have imagined. We had an actual rowing shell there and I spent the majority of the night answering questions about rowing from enthused lake residents. Many residents shared with me how excited they are to see the Adrian College rowing program come to the lake, and how much they are looking forward to watching us practice in the morning as they sip their cup of coffee. Many of them are also excited by the idea of getting in a rowing shell themselves, and my hope is that down the line we could offer a Learn to Row Day for interested lake residents that is staffed by our rowers. A few residents even asked if we could send out our race schedule so they could be sure to be here and cheer us on!

(Adrian College president) Dr. (Jeffrey) Docking stated on Friday night that he and his wife are homeowners on the lake as well and would never want to do anything that might negatively affect lake residents, and I echoed the same comments. I grew up going to Devils Lake with friends whose families had homes on the lake, and I know how much it means to the lake residents. Our goal as co-residents on the lake is to be fantastic neighbors who only add to the lake community, not subtract anything. I am fully confident that our program will be one that Devils Lake residents can be proud to claim as 'their team', one that they look forward to supporting and cheering on."
