FREELAND, Mich.--The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Wednesday released the 2019 men's lacrosse preseason coaches' poll, as Adrian was picked to finish seventh in the standings race this spring. The Bulldogs received 43 points--just six points behind Calvin--in balloting by the league's eight head coaches.
Adrian will begin the Brett Wetzel coaching era on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Wabash. The official home opener will be three days later against Hanover on Kapnick Field at Docking Stadium, starting at 4 p.m. The 16-game docket includes nine home games, the seven-game MIAA circuit beginning in April and five new opponents.
The Bulldogs are led by co-captains sophomore midfielder Kyle Sanderson (South Lyon/Brighton High School) and freshman attackman Chris French (Lake Orion HS). The former led the Bulldogs with 49 face-off wins and topped freshmen on the team with 10 goals and 11 points, while the latter was a three-time Michigan High School Lacrosse Coaches Association all-state selection. Sophomore attack Fernando Rodriguez (Zeeland West HS), the team's top goal scorer a year ago with 19 (24 points), also is back among 10 returners.
The 2019 season officially begins Saturday, Feb. 9, when Calvin hosts Carthage. The MIAA season is slated to start Wednesday, April 3, when Alma entertains Hope. The 2019 MIAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament is set for Thursday and Saturday, May 2 and 4, with highest seeds hosting.
