INDIANAPOLIS--The National Collegiate Athletic Association earlier this week released the first set of PairWise Rankings used to select and seed the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship, where Adrian College is penciled in the No. 7 slot. The 2018-19 season marks the first time that PairWise will be used in Division III as the same formula has been utilized for several years in Division I.
At 18-6-1 and riding a five-game winning streak, the Bulldogs begin the postseason as the No. 2 overall seed in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs. Adrian hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering (9-12-4 overall, 7-8-3 NCHA) in a NCHA-South Division No. 1 and No. 4-seed quarterfinals match-up at Arrington Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, at 7:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m., respectively. (There will be a mini-game, if necessary, immediately following Game 2.) Reserved-seat tickets are available online by clicking on this link; standing-room-only tickets will be sold on gamedays.
The national committee will release two more editions of PairWise Rankings prior to tournament selection, with February 19 and 26 being those dates. A fourth will be generated on Selection Sunday (March 3) and is scheduled to be released to the public on March 4.
The 12-team NCAA Division III field will include eight conference playoff champions earning automatic qualifying bids (Pool A) and four teams receiving at-large, or Pool C, bids.
At-large selection will no longer be governed by the primary and selection criteria, but will be determined by the NCAA PairWise Rankings. In simple terms, the highest-ranked teams in the PairWise will be the at-large teams (those who didn't win their conference playoffs) chosen for the tournament.
Also new this season, there is not a pre-determined site for the Frozen Four. It will instead be hosted at the campus rink of one of the final four participants.
For the purpose of Pool C selection, the committee will use the PairWise Rankings and select the four highest remaining teams. The components used to generate the Pairwise comparisons are as follows: Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) *; Quality Win Bonus (QWB) applied to RPI; Results versus common opponents; and Head-to-Head Results. (* RPI formula is 25-21-54 (25% winning percentage, 21% opponents winning percentage, and 54% opponents' opponents' winning percentage.)
