ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College men's ice hockey coach Adam Krug '12 has announced that the Bulldogs will open the 2018-19 season against NCAA Division I opponent Princeton University in an exhibition contest in Princeton, N.J. That road game highlights a schedule featuring 25 regular-season games--including 12 home dates in the friendly confines of Arrington Ice Arena--and another exhibition versus the United States National Team Development Program Under-18 (USNTDP) squad.
The puck drops on the new season Saturday, Oct. 13, versus the Princeton Tigers in Hobey Baker Rink, who captured their first ECAC title in 10 years and earned their first NCAA tournament bid in nine last March. Princeton is coached by former Adrian bench boss Ron Fogarty (2008-14) who founded the program for its first NCAA season in 2007-08. Krug and assistant coach Shawn Skelly '11 played for Fogarty and were members of the original Bulldogs squad.
On Thursday, Oct. 18, fans can catch a glimpse of the new Adrian team for the annual Black and Gold intrasquad game. The regular season starts in earnest on Oct. 26-27 when the Bulldogs will travel to Utica for a pair of games.
November starts with a five-game home stand for the Black and Gold, starting with a matchup against Lawrence on Nov. 2 in the home opener before Marian (Wis.) come to town the following night. The next weekend sees Finlandia coming Arrington on Nov. 9 and St. Norbert in town on Nov. 10. The homestand comes to an end the next weekend when Adrian faces Trine in a home and home series, with Nov. 16 being a home match for AC before traveling to Trine for the game on Nov. 17.
The Bulldogs will then travel to Norwich University over Thanksgiving weekend for the prestigious PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut. They'll play the host Norwich on Nov. 23 and then either Middlebury or Plattsburgh on Nov. 24. The PrimeLink champion has won the national title five times, qualified for the NCAA tournament all but three, 11 of the 19 PrimeLink champions have made it to the Frozen Four and on seven occasions they have advanced to the national championship game.
Adrian will be on the road again at the end of November when it travels to St. Scholastica on Nov. 30 and then onto Northland on Dec. 1. The Bulldogs are home for the rest of December, hosting Salve Regina for a pair of games on Dec. 7-8 before welcoming SUNY Canton on Dec. 30 to close out play in 2018.
The first contest of 2019 will see the Black and Gold traveling to Plymouth, Mich., for their rematch with the USNTDP on Jan. 8. Adrian lost a 2-1 nailbiter in overtime in its last trip to Plymouth last season. The Bulldogs hit the road again that weekend, traveling to Lake Forest on Jan. 11 and then to Aurora on Jan. 12.
Adrian will be back at home on Jan. 18-19 when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on the 18th and Concordia (Wis.) on the 19th before going back on the road the next weekend for games against St. Norbert on Jan. 25 and Finlandia on Jan. 26.
The Bulldogs close out their home games on Feb. 1-2, hosting Lake Forest and then Aurora, before finishing the regular season on the road at Concordia (Wis.) on Feb. 8 and at MSOE on Feb. 9.
The postseason starts with the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs with the NCHA Quarterfinals (Feb. 16-17), Semifinals (Feb. 24) and Championship (March 3). The NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship runs Mar. 10 (First Round), Mar. 17 (Quarterfinals), Mar. 23 (Semifinals) and Mar. 24 (Championship).
The Bulldogs won their fourth-consecutive NCHA Peters Cup regular-season championship and advanced to the conference tournament final for the 10th time in 11 seasons of their existence. Adrian also made its sixth NCAA tournament appearance in a row and eighth in school history. Adrian finished 24-6 overall and 17-1 for first place in the NCHA-South, producing three All-Americans and 17 All-NCHA and academic all-conference selections.
