INDIANAPOLIS--The NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship Committee unveiled on Monday the 12-team field with the top-ranked Adrian College Bulldogs earning an at-large Pool C bid. This marks the sixth consecutive trip and eighth overall to the NCAA Tournament in Adrian program history.
Adrian, the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Peters Cup champion and Harris Cup runner-up, will host Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday, March 17. Ticket information will be announced later.
The host Bulldogs ended the regular season ranked No. 1 in both national polls. The Pointers (20-5-3 overall, 6-0-2 WIAC/1st place) also received an at-large Pool C bid after falling to Wis.-Eau Claire in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game, 3-2. Both teams received a first-round bye.
Adrian (24-5 overall, 17-1 NCHA South Division) comes into the NCAAs as one of the hottest teams in the country by winning 16 of its last 17 games and outscoring opponents 77 to 24, with three shutouts.
Senior assistant captain Taylor McCloy is having a career year that includes team-leading totals of 23 goals and 37 total points. Junior defenseman Cory Dunn is the team's top playmaker with 27 assists (tied for the most by Division III blueliners) among 30 points. The Bulldogs have two other 30-point scorers in seniors Kyle Brothers (11+23=34) and team captain Mathew Thompson (16+17=33). Junior goalie Kevin Entmaa has compiled a 16-3 won-lost record with 1.75 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, extending his personal record for single-season wins.
Adrian has set a school record for consecutive weeks ranked No. 1 in the U.S. College Hockey Online poll at six, and has been in that position 12 times in its history. The Bulldogs fell to No. 2 in the new polls released today, with 280 points and two 1st-place votes by USCHO.com and 279 points in D3hockey.com.
For UWSP, junior forward Tanner Karty leads the team with 22+26=48 scoring totals and has 91 career points. Senior forward Willem Nong-Lambert (11+22=33) and sophomore forward Luke McElhenie (14+10=24) also are in double digits for both goals and assists. Freshman Steven Quagliata is the Pointers' top scoring defenseman with four goals and 11 assists for 15 total points. Goaltender Max Milosek owns a 16-5-3 record with a 1.85 GAA and .925 save percentage in his senior year.
Adrian and UWSP met two times this season in Stevens Point, with the Pointers winning 3-2 (Dec. 12) and 4-1 (Dec. 13) on home ice.
The winner of this game will advance to the "final four" at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24.
