ADRIAN, Mich. - Penalties nearly cost Adrian College last evening, but on Saturday it was Lawrence who could not stay out of the box in a 3-2 win for the Bulldogs. The Vikings served 13 minor penalties for 26 minutes and Adrian scored all three of their goals on the power play to improve to 11-4 overall and 9-1 in the MCHA.
Lawrence opened the scoring at 12:17 of the first period at even strength as Derek Brickan scored his third goal of the season with assists from Kevin Killian and Gustav Lindgren. Adrian began to really exert itself in the second period and put pressure on Lawrence goaltender Peter Emery. Zach Graham scored twice on the power play in the second period to give Adrian a 2-1 lead. Graham scored at 9:51 for his eighth goal of the season and notched his ninth goal at 11:22. Shelby Gray and Chris Stansik each had assists on both goals.
The Vikings tied the game at 2-2 as Jameson Raymond scored at 19:03 on the power play for his second goal of the season. Brad Scurfield and Phil Bushbacher each had an assist on the goal. The stage was set for newcomer Doug Clifford to make his stamp on the season as he raced down ice and scored on a wrap-around goal at 10:07 of the third period for the game-winning goal. Shawn Courtney and Graham each had an assist on Clifford's first goal as a Bulldog after transferring from Niagara University.
Adrian outshot Lawrence 35-31 and the Bulldogs finished 3-of-10 on the power play for the contest. Scott Shackell made 29 saves to improve to 7-2 in net. The Vikings did empty their net with 21 seconds left, but could not muster a scoring threat.
The Bulldogs will now travel next weekend to Marian (WI) for a big showdown with the Sabres. Marian just finished a surprise weekend sweep against Milwaukee School of Engineering. Marian won 4-2 on the road last night and 4-3 at home on Saturday. The Bulldogs are in first place with 18 points while Marian is second in the MCHA with 17 points.
