ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian College Athletics has announced that its American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 men's gold team will move up to Division 2. The men's black squad will remain in ACHA Division 3.
In addition, the branding for those programs will now be known as ACHA Division 2 and ACHA Division 3, eliminating the color differentiation. All changes will take effect for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
The ACHA Division 2 team, formerly Gold, will compete in the Great Midwest Hockey League (GMHL), while the ACHA Division 3 team (formerly Black) will be in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) East Division. Team rosters will be announced in early September.
Adrian's storied ACHA gold program began competition in Division 3 in the 2009-10 season and the College added the black team in the 2010-11 campaign. Gold won five league and/or division championships in the MCHC and hoisted the national championship trophy for three consecutive years from 2012 to 2014. Together, Black and Gold competed at eight regional and four national tournaments from 2012 to 2017.
"It's amazing to see what we started blossom into a successful program over the last few years" Joe Van Geison, Adrian's director of admissions and former ACHA hockey player at AC, remarked. "To make this transition will add virtually every level of collegiate Hockey here in the beautiful Arrington Ice Arena. It is a great recruiting and competitive advantage, and I cannot wait to see what this team accomplishes at the D2 level."
