FREELAND, Mich.--Led by four-time All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team running back Emmanuel Stewart (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs High School), the Adrian College football team had five student-athletes named to the 2018 all-conference teams in an announcement released by the league office this morning. Joining Stewart on the All-MIAA First Team Offense: classmates Jerron McGaw (Indianapolis, Ind./Thomas Carr Howe HS) at wide receiver and Jaleel Brown (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz HS) on the offensive line. Senior linebacker Chris Adams (St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs HS) made the all-conference first team, while classmate Tim McPhee--also a linebacker--was chosen to the second unit on defense.
Adams twice has made first-team all-conference at linebacker (2018, 2016) and was a first-team defensive back as a 2017 junior. The sports management major posted 32 tackles and 55 total this season, including 6-1/2 for loss of 29 yards. He also had two interceptions and five pass breakups. For his career, he recorded 215 total stops (136 solo) and had 25 pass breakups for 16th (10th) and second in school history, respectively.
A social work major, Brown also repeats his first-team all-conference moniker. He helped anchor an offensive line that paved the way for Stewart to be the school's greatest rusher and one of the nation's top running backs. Nationally, Adrian was 18th in third-down conversions (.485), 27th for fewest tackles for loss against (4.7 per game), 42nd for fewest sacks allowed (1.3 per game) and 54th in total offense (421.7 ypg). Brown helped keep freshman quarterback Jack Wurzer upright, as he ranks eighth in NCAA Division III passing yards per completion (15.63 average) and 20th in passing efficiency (161.7) to lead the MIAA in both categories.
McGaw is a three-time all-conference standout, including first team honors in each of the past two seasons. He led the MIAA with a school-record 12 receiving touchdowns (16th in nation) and conference-best 1,079 yards (14th in nation) and 55 receptions. He winds up his Adrian career first in receiving TDs (27) and second in both receptions (180) and yards (2,974).
McPhee makes his All-MIAA debut after compiling a career-best 91 total tackles (34 solo) to rank second in the conference and first for the Bulldogs. His previous bests were 30 solos and 51 tackles as a junior in 2017. He also had two interceptions for sixth. The criminal justice major finishes his career with 144 total tackles.
Stewart, a social work major, had MIAA ranks of second with 1,308 rushing yards (12th in NCAA III), second with 147.7 all-purpose yards per game (29th in NCAA III), third with 14 rushing TDs (18th in NCAA III), third with 15 total TDs (28th in NCAA III) and third with 90 points scored (29th in NCAA III). He extended his school all-time records for rushing yards, all-purpose yards (5,902) and scoring (356 points) while ending his career ranked as the second active career rushing leader in ALL NCAA Divisions with 5,164 yards.
