Bulldogs Football Picked Third in Annual MIAA Coaches' Preseason Poll
FREELAND, Mich.--The Adrian College football team has been predicted to finish in third place in the 2018 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association race, according to the MIAA coaches preseason poll released on Monday.
With talent returning in several key positions on both sides of the ball, the Bulldogs received 20 points for a solid third place ahead of Olivet (26), Albion (30), Alma (37), Kalamazoo (42) and -football-only MIAA newcomer Finlandia (49).
Defending conference champion Trine claimed first place on seven head coaches' ballots and 7 points as the preseason favorite and No. 2 Hope had one first-place vote for 13 points. The preseason poll for MIAA football awards one point for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vote, et cetera. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own programs.
Adrian (5-5, 4-2) will look to Emmanuel Stewart (Sr., RB, St. Petersburg, Fla.) for impact on offense in 2018, after the three-time first-team All-MIAA selection scored 18 touchdowns and racked up 1,367 yards for the Bulldogs last season. Also returning for Adrian are first-team All-MIAA selections wide receiver Jerron McGaw (Sr., WR, Indianapolis, Ind.), Lawrence Austin (Sr., OLB, Bowling Green, Ohio), and Chris Adams (Sr., DB, St. Petersburg, Fla.). McGaw also earned D3football.com All-North Third Team after leading the MIAA with school records of 10 touchdown catches (tied) and 1,233 yards receiving. He also had a career-best 70 receptions for second on the all-time school chart. Austin (51 tackles) and Adams (58) spearhead the defense.
The Bulldogs will kick off their 114th season on Sep. 1 at Ohio Northern University in Ada.
