ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 team captured its third consecutive Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League championship under head coach Gary Astalos after sweeping rival and No. 7-ranked Davenport on Thursday at home (4-3 in a shootout) and Saturday (8-7) on the road. The Bulldogs, who were ranked third in the latest ACHA computer national poll, now stand at 26-2 overall and 12-0 in the conference, clinching an automatic bid to the ACHA Division 1 Tournament in Frisco, Texas, from March 21-26 in Dr. Pepper Arena/Dr. Pepper StarCenter.
Freshman Manny Silverio scored the game-winner in the shootout after Davenport's Austin Thompson forced overtime midway through the third period. Adrian outshot the Panthers by a 47 to 34 margin. Junior Michael Barrett made 31 saves.
"The GLCHL is a very competitive league so it's always a big accomplishment for us to compete for a league championship," said Astalos, who has guided the Bulldogs to a national championship, 93-6 overall record and 42-1 mark in GLCHL play during his tenure.
"We have had an interesting year with an unusual high amount of injuries this year. What has been enjoyable is to see our players step up every night to help us reach our team goals. Overall, we have a great group of hardworking young men. Our staff is looking forward to the final stretch of the season."
The Bulldogs will be at Liberty University this weekend and have their regular-season, Senior Night home finale on Thursday, Feb. 28, against Calvin College
All told, the Bulldogs have earned seven GLCHL regular-season titles since joining the conference for the 2010-11 season.
