GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--The Adrian College ACHA Division I Men’s squad lost for the first time this season by dropping a 5-4 decision to the third-ranked Davenport Panthers here on Friday--a game which was televised by ESPN 3 as the American Collegiate Hockey Association Game of the Week.
The contest featured a pair of unbeaten squads as the No. 4 Bulldogs entered with an 8-0 mark, while Davenport was 7-0 entering the contest.
Adrian got off to a good start in the first period, outscoring the Panthers 2-1 on goals by Nick Goettle and C.J. Nicholson, but the Panthers scored three times on just nine chances in the second period, including a pair of power play goals, to take a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes, as Adrian’s Marcus Rose had Adrian’s lone second period marker.
The Bulldogs fell further behind at 5-3 when Davenport’s Michael Lozicki became the fifth different Panther to score on the evening just 3 minutes and 54 seconds into the final stanza.
Adrian’s Brad Kobryn scored the final goal with 14:39 left in the game to make the score 5-4, but Adrian could not get the equalizer, despite 14 third-period shots on goal.
Adrian’s Matt Schnoes made 33 saves in the Bulldog net, suffering his first defeat of the season, while his counterpart Jason Rhynold made 32 save for the Panthers.
The game was the only action this week for the Bulldogs, who are now idle until next Saturday and Sunday when they host Mercyhurst in a two-game series. Opening faceoff on Saturday night is 7 p.m., while Sunday’s tilt will begin at 2 p.m. at Arrington Ice Arena.
