KALAMAZOO, Mich.--The Adrian College women's ACHA Division I hockey squad earned an opening day win at the 2016 American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I National Tournament on Wednesday, scoring twice in the 3rd period to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the University of Massachusetts 3-1 at the Wings Events Center West.
Adrian goaltender Allison Dungey outdueled fellow goaltender Samantha Baturin of UMass, as Dungey stopped 25 shots and held the Minutewomen scoreless for the game's last 41 minutes and 40 seconds to preserve the victory for the Bulldogs.
Adrian jumped on top first at the 7:47 mark of the first period with a goal by Sam Fortune from Lauren Hughes to lead 1-0. UMass tied the score with their only goal of the game late in the period, as Michaela Tosone tallied the only marker of the day for the Minutewomen with 1:40 remaining in the first.
Tension mounted after a scoreless 2nd period, but Adrian took the lead for good at the 4:11 mark of the 3rd period, as Alicia Tait set up Kirstin LaBelle for the game winner. Kaillie Hardy put the game away for the Bulldogs with 2:05 remaining in the contest, scoring with a helper from Nichole LaFlamme.
The contest was penalty filled as the two teams combined were whistled for 20 penalties, but the penalty kill units dominated, as the Bulldogs held UMass to 0-11 on the power play while the Bulldogs were scoreless in 8 power play attempts.
The top two teams in each Pool will advance to the final four on Saturday, with the National Championship game slated for 1:00 pm on Sunday in Kalamazoo.
