KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The women's volleyball team (7-9) extended their win streak to three in extended fashion. The team needed extra sets twice in taking two matches Saturday against Kalamazoo (4-12) and Manchester (9-6) to win both matches 3-2. The team only duplicated winning the fifth set twice, after winning sets two and three against Manchester and sets one and four against Kalamazoo. Fortunately, the one set (fifth) where the ladies were flawless was the only one that mattered.
In the first match against Kalamazoo (25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 25-16, 18-16), the team rallied after going down in sets, 2-1. They overpowered Kalamazoo in the fourth set, 25-16, and continued that momentum into the fifth and deciding set. The women were led by Jordan Brisson with 20 kills, Carly Tyson with 26 assists and four blocks, and Emily Ribant with 22 digs. Also contributing substantially were Kristi Walker and Stephanie Holloman with three aces each; and Linnea Berriman with four blocks.
In the second match, again the team came from behind after losing the first set. They looked destined to seal the victory in the fourth set, but fell 23-25. The teams played so close during the first four sets that only one point separated the four-set cumulative score (94-93) in Adrian's favor. But with the match on the line, the team again prevailed in the fifth and deciding set, 15-11. Leading the team against Manchester were Brisson with 17 kills, Walker with 14 digs, Tyson with 24 assists, Berriman with seven block assists; and Ellie Mindick, who contributed seven aces, eight kills and 18 digs.
Coach Kwan and his squad hope to extend their winning streak to four with their next matchup at home against cross-town rival Sienna Heights on Monday, Sept. 24th at 7:00 p.m.
