Women's Tennis Clinch 5-4 Victory Over Heidelberg

ADRIAN, Mich.- Sophomore Olivia Neumann swept Catherine Harris in No. 6 singles by identical 6-4 set scores to clinch a 5-4 win for Adrian College over visiting Heidelberg University in non-conference women's tennis action on Monday at the Craft Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 2-2 on the season while Heidelberg is 1-1.

Adrian took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. Sophomores Amber Laginess and McKenzie Krieg teamed up at No. 3 to breeze by Allison Costatino and Harris, 8-1, to propel the Bulldogs into the singles round.

In singles, Laginess and Krieg also won at 4 and 5, respectively, to help stake Adrian to a 4-1 lead. Both student-athletes won in straight sets.

The top of the HU singles order helped the visitors storm back and even the match at four points apiece. Sofey Fugate needed a tiebreaker to edge senior Arielle Williams, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1, Nicole Millar just got by senior Morgan Spencer in a super tiebreaker, 6-1, 3-6, 12-10, at No. 2, and Markilynn Hogle  defeated sophomore Renae Adams Almasy, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3

That forced a winner-take-all meeting at No. 6 singles that Neumann emerged victorious.

Adrian returns to the courts on Saturday when it hosts Lawrence Tech for another out of conference outing, starting at noon.
