LEXINGTON, Ohio - The women's tennis team improved to 5-0 on Sunday with a 5-4 win over Heidelberg University. In the first match of 2014, the Bulldogs continued their unbeaten play in dramatic fashion on the road.
Adrian held a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kylee Bezeau and Arielle Williams rallied for a big 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles. Justine Hanson and Morgan Spencer teamed up at No. 2 for a convincing 8-3 win. Haley Freilino and Victoria Watson could not hang onto their lead and fell 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker).
In singles competition, Heidelberg made a charge at the Bulldogs but were held off in the end. Williams had arguably the best match of the day at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Sofey Fugate. Spencer and Watson were on court as the 'Berg took a 4-3 lead and were looking to close out the match. Spencer tied the score at 4-4 with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Diedre Potter. Watson playing in her first singles match this season had the pressure squarely on her shoulders and she delivered. Watson won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles over Melissa Lovati.
"The ladies pulled off a very close match today and I am proud they dug deep and came out of it with a win," said an exuberant head coach Adam Albertsen. "All the girls played well at certain parts of the day, I am really pleased with how Arielle and Morgan were able to fight and pick up wins in both singles and doubles play. Tori stepped up and closed the match out in a high pressure situation."
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when they host Spring Arbor University at 3 p.m.
